Frequently Asked Questions

Everything parents usually want to know before we speak — how lessons work, what they cost, and how I keep your child safe. If your question isn't here, just ask me on the call.

Getting started

With a free call — just you and me, before your child meets me at all. You tell me what's been happening, send over any reports or plans you'd like me to read, and I'll tell you exactly how I'd work with your child and what I'd expect to change. Twenty minutes, no cost, and you'll come away with a plan whether or not you book.

No. A great many of the families I work with are somewhere on a waiting list, sometimes with years to go, and some have no diagnosis at all. I teach the child in front of me, not the paperwork — and if it would help, I can write down what I observe, which is often useful evidence to have.

Primary through to A Level, roughly ages 7 to 18. English, literacy and dyslexia support, essay writing and exam technique, alongside communication and confidence work, plus LAMDA speaking and communication qualifications.

Almost none of them do, and I’d be surprised if yours did. The first lesson has no targets and nothing to get wrong — we just meet. They can type, use the chat, or listen while I do the talking. Going quiet with someone new isn’t a warning sign, it’s the starting point. It’s the same starting point for autistic children and for children who can’t face school at the moment.

Lessons and scheduling

Online, across the UK. For a lot of SEN learners this is an advantage rather than a compromise — they're at home in a familiar room, there's no journey to manage at either end, the camera can be off, and they can move around freely without anyone commenting.

One hour a week as a 12-week course, and I teach every single lesson myself. No roster, no rematching, no handovers. Twelve weeks with the same person is what makes the difference — confidence doesn't rebuild in three sessions.

We work in short chunks with clear endings, so your child can always see how much is left. Camera off, fidgeting, standing up and looking away are all fine. If something isn't working that day, we do less of it rather than pushing through. You don't need to sit in, and you'll get a short note afterwards telling you what we did and what's next.

Let me know in advance and we'll move it. Some weeks are harder than others with SEN learners, and I'd much rather reschedule than have a lesson become another thing your child dreads.

Fees and funding

A 12-week course of weekly one-hour lessons is £1,000. A trial lesson is £79 and includes a written summary afterwards of what I noticed about your child — yours to keep whatever you decide next. There’s a full breakdown of how the course runs and what each stage costs.

Yes. The course can be split into monthly payments rather than paid upfront — just say so on the call.

Sometimes. If a plan names one-to-one tuition, I can be the person providing it. If you’re applying or appealing, I can supply written teaching evidence for the process — and as a former SENCO I know what a strong piece of evidence looks like. My page on EHCP and EOTAS funded provision explains the routes in plain English.

Safeguarding and safety

Yes — Enhanced DBS, verified through the DBS Update Service, so it's kept current rather than dated. I'm also Safeguarding Level 2 trained, updated annually, to the same standard as serving school staff.

Lessons run on a standard video platform, and you're welcome to be present or nearby at any point without asking. All arrangements, scheduling and updates go through you rather than directly to your child, and I don't communicate with children privately. Nothing is recorded without your explicit agreement.

Yes. Every lesson is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Still have a question?

Ask me on the call — that's what it's for. Twenty minutes, no cost, and no obligation to book anything afterwards.

I teach every lesson myself, so I take a limited number of students at a time. If you’d like a place this term, it’s worth getting in touch now.
